Role Description/Criteria

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Catholic Parish Primary School Epping North is a diverse, innovative and student centered learning community. This community is committed to the safety, wellbeing and protection of all children in our care. 

St Mary of the Cross MacKillop Primary School is seeking a skilled classroom practitioner with a passion for leadership and literacy to lead our school in improving outcomes for all students. The Literacy Leader is a full time position and a major leadership role in our school. An additional dual Deputy Principal position will be considered for the right applicant.

The School Literacy Leader will:

  • Lead continuous school improvement in the area of literacy and implement school improvement goals 
  • Develop, model, implement and monitor whole school literacy approaches and understandings of the English Curriculum
  • Collaborate with and support teachers in the design, implementation and assessment of an effective literacy program that meets the needs of all students
  • Lead and promote staff professional learning opportunities including regular literacy PLC
  • Undertake professional learning in order to be informed with best practice and latest curriculum initiatives
  • Maintain, collate, analyse and communicate assessment data to drive student improvement in literacy 
  • Liaise with the Learning & Teaching Leader to strategically maintain literacy resources
  • Work collaboratively with other members of the Curriculum Team to support and develop consistency through all learning and teaching practices 
  • Liaise with the Literacy Intervention teacher and Learning Diversity Leader to identify students requiring literacy intervention inline with the Intervention Policy
  • Have an applied knowledge of the EAL Curriculum to support staff in engagement and implementation
  • Be an active member of the Leadership Team by enacting the Educational Vision and Philosophy of our school and taking on responsibilities that contribute to the smooth running of our school
  • Contribute to the School Annual Report in line with the School Improvement Plan

  • Accreditation to teach in Catholic School and/or committed to providing a Catholic education for all students
  • Committed to upholding the SMCM Child Safety Policy and Code of Conduct
  • Post graduate qualifications or a commitment to a postgraduate qualification in the next 2 years. 
  • Dedicated to catering for the individual needs of students in a school wide positive behaviour for learning environment
  • Committed to building authentic relationships with all staff, children and families 
  • Willing to work collaboratively with others in a flexible learning environment
  • Proven organisational and time management skills
  • Proven ability to work independently and collaboratively in a spirit of collegiality within a team
  • Demonstrate capacity to lead and manage in ways that values and upholds high expectations of staff and students and that promote learning, growth and success
  • Demonstrate ability to reflect on one’s own practise and commitment to ongoing professional learning and growth in the areas of education and leadership
  • Proven commitment to our Catholic Tradition and Community & Family Engagement.

  • Assume responsibility for the operation of the School in the absence of the Principal
  • Demonstrate a commitment to Catholic education and an understanding of the leadership role in Catholic education
  • Demonstrate a commitment to the safety and wellbeing of children
  • Have experience in a formally appointed leadership role within a Catholic parish primary school and have teaching experiences in a range of educational settings
  • Have academic qualifications additional to initial teacher education 
  • Be accredited to teach Religious Education in Catholic schools
  • Assist the Principal with general administrative and management tasks.
