On 7 February 2016, Caritas Australia launched its annual Project Compassion appeal which runs through the six weeks of Lent. This is the 50th year of Students at St bede's College, Mentone, making pancakes for Project Compassion FundraiserProject Compassion – one of Australia’s largest humanitarian fundraising and awareness-raising campaigns.

This year the appeal promotes the theme ‘Learning more, creating change’, a theme that resonates for the Catholic schools throughout the Archdiocese that celebrate and participate in the campaign to help end poverty.

On Pancake Tuesday, St Bede’s College, Mentone , had its second Pancake Tuesday fundraiser for Project Compassion. Hosted by the Lasallian Youth Leaders, these senior students prepared the pancake mix, cooked the pancakes with great care and served them with delicious toppings.

Around 500 pancakes were cooked and eagerly purchased, raising $380 for Project Compassion, to assist the work of Caritas Australia in their work with developing communities.

Last year, together with parishes and other community groups, Catholic schools helped to raise a record-breaking $11.57 million nationally.
