Students at Mount Lilydale Mercy College building their toy library13 July 2017

The senior Victorian Certificate of Applied Learning (VCAL) students at Mount Lilydale Mercy College have received the award for Senior Team Achievement at the 2016 VCAL Student Achievement Awards held last month in June for their ongoing work with the Mount Evelyn Toy Library.

The students began a partnership with the Toy Library at Intermediate level where they built and donated a puppet theatre. Keen to keep this partnership going during their Senior level in 2016, the students proposed providing a greater variety of toys to the Toy Library.

This project involved the students researching the range of existing toys and how effective they were in helping children meet their developmental goals. Along the way the students would present their ideas to the Library Secretary who offered feedback to assist the team refine their ideas.

Toys were constructed from a range of recycled and purchased materials and included a wooden puzzle, a wooden laptop computer with a chalkboard screen, an interactive felt board, and rag dolls.

This win for the Senior VCAL students marks the third consecutive VCAL Student Achievement Award for Mount Lilydale Mercy College, previously receiving the Senior Team Achievement in 2015, and the Intermediate Team Achievement in 2014.
