01 November 2017Nazareth College VCAL students with Balloon league footballers

Throughout the year, Nazareth College, Noble Park North, VCAL students have been the Team Managers of a number of Balloon Football teams.

Balloon Football is a modified version of AFL played indoors. Teams of five players in manual and electric wheelchairs compete in the Southern league. The sport allows people of all abilities the opportunity to participate in a competitive sport.

In the last week of Term 3 the Balloon Football League's Grand Final provided the 200 plus spectators with a great example of this competitive sport. After the presentation of this year’s Premiership trophy to the Bulldogs, Nazareth students enjoyed a shared lunch with the players, their families and support workers.

Nazareth College also hosted the Southern BFL John Bowen Medal and Awards Night at the school (this is the BFL's version of the Brownlow Medal count). Much planning and organisation went into the event for more than 130 guests. Each year, Nazareth College’s VCAL students transform the school’s Wheeler Auditorium into a Reception Centre, with dining tables and a dance floor.

The Auditorium was decorated with an AFL Footy Theme and guests dressed up for this social occasion. A record number of 30 players eagerly attended and invited their family and friends to join them in celebrating a fun season of Balloon Football.

This year's Premiers received their Premiership flag and medallions and the VCAL Team Managers’ Reports were presented by students, acknowledging the contributions each player made to their team and recognising their personal achievements over the season. One team member from each team received the 'Most Valuable Team Member' Award and were presented with a trophy.
