2 November 2017St John Vianney’s circus performance

For this year’s school concert at St John Vianney’s School, Parkdale East, the audience was welcomed to a big top tent with roaming stilt walkers, bags of fresh popcorn, a photo booth and a crazy hair booth.

In preparation for the circus extravaganza, the school had engaged the Little Devils Circus Company to deliver an eight-week program introducing all the students to a range of circus skills. Each class was then allocated skills to master for the concert.

Deputy Principal, Helen Tancheff said, ‘Our students were totally engaged in the wonderful circus program that provided them with a range of thinking and coordination skills. Each student needed to problem solve, use spatial imagination and practice all the circus skills both independently and in groups. They learned how to focus and concentrate on new skills.’

The students thought it was great: ‘I loved doing The Music Man’, said Billy, Prep; ‘I liked doing the Piggy Tale trick’, said Jake, Prep; ‘I loved learning all the tricks!’ said Jacinta, Year 3; and ‘We loved having crazy hair!’ said Leila, Year 3.

School Principal, Shane Regan said, ‘The key to any event like our production is that it brings our community – students, teachers and parents together to celebrate our achievements. Circus SJV challenged our children to go beyond a singing and dancing performance to the acquisition of some new skills which they showcased so effectively’.

‘I had many parents comment on the skill and coordination of the students and how engaging and entertaining our concert was. They felt that each student was able to be included and have time to shine on stage’, said Ms Tancheff.
