There was great news for Catholic families near Geelong at the beginning of Term 3 with the
announcement that St Mary Mackillop Primary School would open in Bannockburn at the beginning of 2018. With experienced principal Anthony Drill announced as the school’s foundation principal, St Mary Mackillop Primary School is one of four new Catholic primary schools opening in January.

Two of the year’s biggest weeks dominated the news during August. ‘Future earth’ was the theme for National Science Week this year, and schools engaged in many activities including engineering furniture at Star of the Sea College, Brighton, primary and secondary schools working together on STEM projects and Green Rangers at Mary Immaculate School, Ivanhoe, working hard to save the planet by protecting their local environment.

Science Week was soon followed by Book Week, and it was as much a celebration of writers as it was of readers. Presentation College Windsor Year 8 student Isobel Stuart launched her debut novel Fat Boy, and Holy Family School, Mount Waverley, teacher Christian der Kinderen launched his picture story book The Blobs.

Beyond the classroom, schools got behind some important issues in our community. Student at St Kevin’s School, Templestowe, collected blankets and socks for the homeless, students from Catholic secondary schools gathered with the Kilbreda College FIRE carriers to promote Aboriginal reconciliation, and students, parents and teachers from St Bridget’s School, Greythorn, and Siena College, Camberwell, took on a mammoth cooking challenge to stock their food banks to support people in need.

Term 3 was also a time for celebration with our own Archbishop Hart reaching his 50th anniversary of ordination. A few days later, Archbishop Hart was welcoming our newest teachers at a special function for our most recent graduate teachers in our schools.

We hope all of our teachers and students have a restful break over the next two weeks, particularly our year 12 students who are preparing for exams beginning next month.
