Slam poets from St Mary’s School, Williamstown.18 August 2022

Slam poets from St Mary’s School, Williamstown, have taken their work from the classroom to two sold-out performances.

Unlike more traditional forms of poetry, slam poetry is loud, exciting and fun. The school’s project was about giving students confidence in performance, as well as developing literacy skills.

The Year 6 students performed at two sold-out ‘gigs’ to finish off the project: one at Customs House Hotel in Williamstown and the other at the Williamstown Literary Festival in the Town Hall. Festival organisers and audience members were amazed by the level of the students’ work and performance, and the festival organisers are already asking the school to come back for next year’s event.

The Year 6 students worked with poet Emilie Zoey Baker to develop their poetry and performances. The students came away more confident, excited and ready to show the world what they can do.
