Two teams of Year 6 students from St Paul’s School, Coburg, have received honourable mentions in a poster competition from the Statistical Society of Australia (SSA).

Jessica C and Eloise C were recognised for their poster posing the question ‘Does age affect the order of Smarties eaten?’, while Stanley C and Jake H were recognised for their poster posing the question ‘Does gender or grade level affect seating preference?’ The students worked in pairs to produce a poster which they worked on during Term 4 in their maths extension group. Their entry was based on a statistics unit which they focused on during Term 3.

The SSA National Schools Poster Competition is a fun, project-based learning activity which encourages primary and secondary school students to develop, implement and creatively report upon an investigation of any topic of interest to them. Students conduct small-scale versions of real-world investigations, developing core STEM and cross-functional skills. They create an informative e-poster presentation communicating their investigation clearly, concisely and creatively.
