The students at Our Lady Star of the Sea School, Ocean Grove, are excited to get to work on their ‘Hands up for biodiversity’ initiative, having been awarded a 2024 Victorian Junior Landcare and Biodiversity grant.

The grant, worth nearly $5000, will support their school-wide initiative, which will focus on positively impacting the natural environment through education, appreciation, connection and awareness-raising.

The central goal of the project is to enhance and promote biodiversity within the school and local community through a variety of impactful, hands-on initiatives, including:

  • planting locally indigenous species
  • removing invasive weeds
  • installing habitat and nesting boxes for native wildlife
  • creating pollinator and bush tucker gardens.
As a key focus of the 2025 school year, students at each level will be engaged in biodiversity-focused educational activities, such as:
  • design and creation of a large mural celebrating local flora and fauna
  • citizen science and monitoring
  • learning through Art, STEM and special Tree Day events.

These activities will be supported and strengthened through partnerships with local environment groups and school families. By engaging the students both in the classroom and in the wider community, the school is embedding the importance of care for our common home and the students’ vital role as stewards of creation.

The grants are delivered through Landcare Australia’s Junior Landcare program and funded by the Victorian Government.
