During the Jubilee Hope Pilgrimage for Principals in Rome, participants had the profound privilege of being in the presence of Pope Leo XIV as he presided over the first vespers of the Blessed Virgin Mary of the Rosary in Pompeii, held at the Domus Australia Chapel. A pilgrim shared their experience:

‘In his homily, Pope Leo presented us with an invitation as faithful pilgrims during the Jubilee Year of Hope, to take Mary as a model to “always be confident and grateful”. He spoke about Mary having hope and in turn giving her strength and courage to spend her life willingly for the sake of the Gospel and give herself tirelessly to God’s will. She opened her heart to God and Pope Leo asked us to do the same.’

The Jubilee Year of Hope Pilgrimage for Principals brought together leaders from sixteen MACS primary schools. Accompanied by Fr Michael Gallacher and Fr Michael Buck, the group journeyed through Rome, visiting the four Holy Doors and significant sites tied to the Church and its saints - pillars of our faith and leadership in Catholic education.

Sarah McDermott, principal at Our Lady of Fatima School, Rosebud and Annabelle Marinelli, principal at St Joseph’s School, Malvern, reflected on the experience:

‘Crossing the threshold of the Holy Door reminded us of the passage from St John’s Gospel: “I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved.” Passing through the Holy Door is a powerful expression of our decision to follow and be guided by Jesus, the Good Shepherd.’

The Jubilee of Hope Pilgrimage for Principals included visits to Rome, Loreto and Assisi. It has been designed to embody Pope Francis’ message of hope for this Jubilee Year.
