Archbishop Denis Hart heaped generous praise upon the achievements of five Victorian young people, as he presented them with the Father James Wall 2017 Father Wall Bursary recipientsBursary at the St Patrick’s Centre in East Melbourne on the 17 March.
 

The Father James Wall Bursary provides five leadership achievement awards of $4,000, made annually to Year 10 Catholic secondary school students who demonstrate leadership potential in a range of areas. These include science, arts, public speaking, sporting activities, community service and social justice activities.

One award recipient, Kathleene Mendoza from Catholic Regional College (CRC), St Albans, was awarded because of her leadership in a number of areas of school and community life. She is an exemplary student with an outstanding academic record. In 2016 she undertook two Units 1 and 2 subjects excelling in both. She received the Mary Mackillop award for academic excellence in all year levels. Academia is just one facet of Kathleen’s life at CRC. She was a social Justice Captain and a Peer support leader in 2016.

Principal of CRC St Albans, Christina Utri, stated ‘Kathleene reminds us of the need to nourish the heart, mind and soul’ of all people. Kathleene has been involved in many different initiatives one being the celebration of cultural diversity, she lead Harmony Day in the school community. Kathleen also works hard in the sporting arena being a role model for younger students. She has won the Caltex All Rounder Award on more than one occasion and last year was College Sports woman of the year.

She is an active member of the Sacred Heart St Albans parish where she regularly contributes to parish fundraising activities. Somehow Kathleene finds time to train for karate, swim competitively and tutor at the Edmund Rice Community and Refugee Services Homework Club. Many of her initiatives will continue at CRC St Albans as she goes on contribute and walk tall at CRC Sydenham.

Three other bursaries were awarded to students from the Archdiocese of Melbourne:

  • Gabrielle Hurrel, Catholic Ladies College, Eltham
  • Sophie Chan, Our Lady of Sion College, Box Hill
  • Abbey Walsh, Catholic College, Sale

The bursary, provided through the sponsorship of the Catholic Development Fund, assists with school fees and other expenses during the student’s Year 11 and 12 studies.

In presenting the awards to each of these outstanding students, Archbishop Hart congratulated each of the girls for their great gifts, their generosity, their energy, their commitment and their resolve to not only see what needs doing, but to take action and achieve it.
