28 November 2022

The Catholic Education Commission of Victoria Ltd (CECV) congratulates Premier Daniel Andrews and the Victorian Labor Party on their election victory.

Executive Director Jim Miles said the result will now enable the rollout of the $717 million election commitment made by the Labor Party for new and upgraded non-government schools, dedicated funding to build and upgrade kindergartens, and the expansion of the popular Smile Squad dental program.

‘Cost of living is such a significant factor for many of our low-income families, so being able to receive a free dental check-up for their children will be a welcome relief’, he said.

‘These commitments mean that Catholic education and the 211,000 students we support will receive substantial benefits following the election.’

Mr Miles said the significant focus on school capital infrastructure is a recognition of the need to address growing student demand and that additional government investment would go a long way to alleviating this pressure.

‘Building the Education State means investing in all sectors and parts of the education system so that every child is given the same opportunities, no matter what school they attend’, he said.

‘We asked for equity and access for all Victorian students, and we continue to make progress towards that goal with the commitments we have received from the Andrews Labor Government.’

Mr Miles said there has been a longstanding and constructive working relationship with the Labor Government that has put Catholic education firmly on the agenda in working towards delivering a world-class education system in Victoria.

‘We look forward to continuing to build on our relationship with the incoming Labor Government and ensuring the delivery of these election commitments for our families’, he concluded.
