22 April 2025

Melbourne Archdiocese Catholic Schools (MACS) joins the global Catholic community in mourning the passing of His Holiness Pope Francis.

Executive Director of MACS, Dr Edward Simons, reflected on the Pope’s impact, saying, 'He has inspired every teacher with his commitment to the human dignity of each person, and the rights of every child to find love and freedom – and to the invitation for each of us to grow and flourish in wisdom.'

Many MACS schools acknowledged the Pope’s passing today with services across primary and secondary schools where thousands of students prayed and lit candles to honour the pontiff, who was a passionate advocate for education.

'Education is above all a matter of love and responsibility handed down from one generation to another.' – Pope Francis.

The pontiff consistently called on leaders and communities to serve the vulnerable and those on the margins, always reminding the world of the sacred dignity of every human life.

The MACS community will hold Pope Francis in prayer and give thanks for his extraordinary life of service.
