History:
Since its registration in 1886, St John's School in Clifton Hill has continued to be an essential element in the Catholic education of children in North Fitzroy, Clifton Hill and surrounding areas. For many years the Sisters of Charity were the Principals and major staff of the school and their charism is still important to the school community today. The Charity motto, 'The Love of Christ Urges Us On' is at the core of the Catholic ethos of the school community. The Salesians of Don Bosco, another teaching order, now have pastoral care of the parish and their gentle educational philosophy is also an important part of the current mission of the school.

St John's School is a small inner city primary school located close to the CBD and well connected by public transport at the doorstep. We have a diverse population with families represented from all parts of the world. As a small school we build unique relationships with our students and their families and pride ourselves on being a welcoming and hospitable community. We take pride in providing stimulating learning, achieving excellent results and taking care of the wellbeing of all of our students.
Our facilities include a relatively new building completed in 2010 that smoothly connects with the existing, heritage-listed building to provide learning areas under one roof. The facilities include a multi-purpose hall, library resource centre, general purpose and special classrooms, indoor toilet facilities, two new adventure playgrounds and a passive play area with an emphasis on sensory experiences designed to help children regulate emotions so they are ready to learn.

St John's School offers a core curriculum based on the Victorian Curriculum with specialist programs in: Visual Arts, Performing Arts, Physical Education, and Languages Other Than English (Mandarin). The school partners with Camp Australia to offer Before- and After-School Care. We have embraced a Differentiated Learning Approach to our Learning and Teaching and continue to develop this across the school. Our focus on Student Well-being has seen us develop a passive play area and lead us to soften the concrete and asphalt of our yard with garden beds, selected plantings including trees shrubs and a range of edible and sensory plants.
