Role Description/Criteria

The Counsellor and Wellbeing Officer plays an integral role in supporting the wellbeing, engagement, and connectedness of students at our school. As a key member of the Wellbeing Team, this role focuses on delivering student wellbeing services, providing individual and small-group support, and implementing proactive programs that promote mental health, resilience, and positive relationships. By fostering a safe, inclusive, and supportive environment, the Counsellor and Wellbeing Officer helps ensure that every student feels valued, respected, and ready to engage in their learning.

Working collaboratively with staff, families, and external agencies, the Counsellor and Wellbeing Officer provides pastoral care and guidance to students, assisting them in navigating academic, social, and emotional challenges. This role also contributes to the development of strategies that improve student engagement, attendance, and connectedness within the school. Through these efforts, the Counsellor and Wellbeing Officer builds strong, trusting relationships with students and the wider school community while ensuring access to additional supports where needed, always maintaining professionalism, confidentiality, and ethical practice.

A key aspect of this role within our St Mary’s school environment is fostering strong partnerships with parents and caregivers, recognising them as the first and most important educators of our young people. The Counsellor and Wellbeing Officer will work closely with families, providing regular communication, guidance, and support as they navigate the many challenges and milestones of parenting and family life. Through this collaboration, we aim to create a consistent, supportive approach that nurtures the wellbeing and growth of every child in our care.
