Our Lady of Mount Carmel School is one of the three Catholic primary schools serving the Parish of Sunbury. The school was established in 1860 under the management of a lay principal and 32 children were on the roll.

The Sisters of St Joseph arrived in 1916 and continued to serve the school community as principal or staff members until the end of 1989. The following year, 1990, was the first year for 73 years that the Sisters of St Joseph had not had a formal role within the school.

There has been a substantial growth in the area over the past 30 years and this is predicted to continue. A second school, St Anne’s, was opened in 1978 to cater for the growing number of parishioners wanting Catholic education for their children.
The enrolment at Our Lady of Mount Carmel is currently 285.

Our school has a teaching and administration staff of 27. We have 11 classrooms, a multipurpose room and a large modern resource centre housing our library and computer lab. Our school is a mixture of lovingly restored and modern buildings.
The school is surrounded by landscaped garden beds and has a play area that consists of hard and grassed areas. There is a netball/basketball court, football and soccer areas and a large adventure playground. Parish facilities on site include Our Lady of Mount Carmel Church. Our students have access to Before and After School Care through the City of Hume.

Parents play a vital role in helping to deliver the curriculum through: reading programs, sporting activities, excursions, Parents and Friends, Working Bees and classroom help.
Our Lady of Mount Carmel provides an inclusive curriculum catering for students’ individual needs. We integrate our curriculum through the inquiry approach to learning. The school implements a number of programs including: The ‘To Know, Worship and Love’ Religious Education Texts, parish sacramental programs, Children’s Literacy Success Story (CLaSS) and Success in Numeracy Education (SINE). Additional staff provide support to students in a variety of curriculum areas including English, Mathematics, Japanese, Physical Education, Music, Visual and Performing Arts. Staff provide students with access to special needs programs and student wellbeing programs, including Seasons and Reading Recovery.

Our school also offers camp experiences to students in Years 3–6 and participates in Interschool Sports.
