History:
St Monica's School is situated in the Parish of Moonee Ponds.
Our school is proud of its close-knit community and rich heritage which goes back to 1856 when the first Catholic school was opened in the Essendon district. As the population increased in the district, the growing Catholic community wanted a Catholic education for its children. The first school, known as the 'Iron Pot', was established near Napier Street and staffed by lay people. In 1880, it was relocated to a site in the present infant yard. This was known as the first St Monica's Church School.
As the area developed and the number of children increased, the Sisters of Charity and, later, the Christian Brothers, were invited to staff the schools. The Christian Brothers Boys' School and the Sisters of Charity Girls' School soon developed a reputation for excellence. In 1984 the two schools were amalgamated and a lay principal was commissioned.
As the school embraces a new millennium, we continue to strive for the ideals and excellence that have been a part of our parish school since its inception.
