The Sisters of Charity opened St Vincent de Paul School, North Essendon (as it was known then), on 26 January 1937. The first Sisters appointed to undertake the Catholic education of the 40 students enrolled were Sister M. Avellino Walsh and Sister M. Helena Parker.

It was not until 1941 that the parish of St Vincent de Paul, North Essendon, was established and in 1943 the area was renamed Strathmore. The school has undergone seven building program stages since then.

After an initial enrolment of 40 students in 1937, the school population peaked in 1960 with 600 students in classes of 80 to 90 students and with 11 teaching staff. Through its 64 years of existence, St Vincent de Paul School has made an enormous contribution to the lives of the children and families of this community.

St Vincent de Paul Parish Primary School is found in Woodland Street, Strathmore, in the north-western suburbs, about 12 km from central Melbourne.

The school currently has a teaching and administrative staff of 34. Approximately 410 students from about 270 families are arranged in two streams from Year 1 to Year 6 with the Prep classes arranged into three smaller streams.
