History:

Sacred Heart School opened in St Albans in February 1954 with an enrolment of 180 children and four classrooms. By 1957 the enrolment had grown to 860 children, accommodated in 13 classrooms. The school was established by the Sisters of St Joseph, who still maintain a presence on the current staff. The school has been extensively rebuilt, refurbished and extended over the 40 years of its existence. Being situated in a multicultural community, the school has always had a majority of students for whom English is a second language.


Description:

Sacred Heart is a Catholic primary school located in the area of St Albans, which is in the western region of Melbourne. It is a Catholic primary which works closely with the parish and two other parish schools: Emmaus and Cana. There are about 240 students in this school and they are from 35 different cultural backgrounds. Many of these students are supported financially by the Parish of Sacred Heart. This school's particular emphasis on literacy and numeracy has reaped successful rewards in the high rate of achievement in the students' literacy and numeracy levels.
