Year 11 and 12 Indonesian language students at St Bede’s College, Mentone, participating in the first Indonesian Model UN Conference

Year 11 and 12 Indonesian language students at St Bede’s College, Mentone, participated in the first Indonesian Model UN Conference at Treasury Theatre on Friday 11 August 2017. The students’ hard work and preparation paid off as they spoke confidently using their language skills.

The St Bede’s students showed they were very well researched and informed on their allocated countries (the USA, the Congo, the United Kingdom and Papua New Guinea) and very keen to debate topical issues.

The topic of the UN Model Conference was ‘The Responsibility to Protect: Preventing Mass Atrocity Crimes’ which was challenging, but it provided the students with an opportunity to discuss and debate a real world issue.

Participating students shared their thoughts on the experience:

"Throughout the day, we engaged in diplomatic relations with other ‘countries’ while speaking in the Indonesian language! This conference allowed us to not only expand our knowledge on the Indonesian language, but also gave us an insight into the global issues that pertain to the rest of the world."

The day was an amazing experience where, as students we were able to meet people from many different schools from around the area and put our knowledge of the Indonesian language into action. The day focused around amending bills, which were designed to protect the citizens of all countries against mass atrocities.

"For myself, the day was a great experience, where practicing what we have learnt throughout the year, could be put into action with many other students from across the state. Overall, the conference was a wonderful event and it has helped both myself and everyone else further their Indonesian studies."
