Sacred Heart College, Kyneton, hosted ‘Junior Chef’, a cooking competition for nearby Catholic primary schools. Year 4 students from Holy Cross Primary School, New Gisborne, Our Lady of the Rosary, Kyneton, St Ambrose’s School, Woodend, St Brigid’s School, Gisborne, St Mary’s School, Castlemaine, and St Mary’s School, Lancefield, were challenged to produce plates of delicious food for a panel of judges. The competition gives the students an opportunity to build on their culinary and teamwork skills, while experiencing a secondary school environment.

At their first session, students were challenged to prepare pancakes with a mixed berry sauce. Despite their nervousness, the excitement of the situation kicked in as teams produced food of exceptional quality, ably assisted by Year 12 mentors from Sacred Heart College. During the final session, students were challenged to prepare fresh fettuccine with Napolitana sauce in only 45 minutes.

Judges and local chefs, Damian Sandercock and Tansy Good, had the challenge of eating their way through the delicious entries. In the end it was Eloise, Audrey, Xanthe and Thomas, the young chefs from Our Lady of the Rosary, who claimed the title of Junior Chef 2019.

‘We can’t believe we actually won’, they said. ‘It was a great experience. We had loads of fun. We all think we worked really well together. We are very grateful for the opportunity and we all loved it.’
