The Year 11 student was one of two recipients of the Leading From the Front Achievement Award and shared the $5,000 prize. The award encourages young people in the City of Hume to follow their dreams and strive to be the best they can be. It recognises the legacy of Corporal Cameron Baird VC MG, a Hume local and national hero who was killed in 2013.

Rihan proposes to put the money towards supporting the Sustainable Development Goal of ‘Zero Hunger’ in her local community.

‘As a community we need to stand with others, and what makes a community function well is when we come together to help those within our community’, she said. ‘It lets people know that they are not alone, and that helps another person make it through the week.’

Rihan’s plan is to work with local grocery stores, bakeries and other food outlets to reduce the amount of food wastage. She is also hoping to educate people on how to prepare healthy, quick and affordable food.
