Remembrance Day is an opportunity to pay respect to the men and women who have served and died in wars and armed conflicts. Each year on this day, Australians observe one minute’s silence at 11 am.

Virtual tours of the Shrine of Remembrance

In the lead-up to Remembrance Day, school classes were invited to join a free and interactive virtual tour of the Shrine of Remembrance.

Tours explore the Shrine’s historic and intriguing memorial and museum, explain the history and meaning of Remembrance Day, and the global tradition of observing a minute’s silence at 11 am. Shrine education guides bring remembrance to life with inspiring stories of real Victorians in wartime.

Live-streamed Remembrance Day service

All Victorians are invited to watch the Remembrance Day service which will be live-streamed via the Shrine’s Facebook and YouTube channels from 10.45 am on 11 November. The program includes the laying of a wreath on behalf of all Victorians by the Governor of Victoria, a minute of silence as the sun crosses the Stone of Remembrance, music from the Exaudi youth choir and a flyover of the Shrine by the RAAF Museum 1939 aircraft Lockheed Hudson. Special Remembrance Day resources

The Shrine’s Remembrance Day resources this year include a downloadable art activity suitable for primary school students, and a special behind-the-scenes session to look at the science and technology behind the Ray of Light.

After Remembrance Day

If you would like your class to virtually visit the Shrine from your classroom any time after Remembrance Day, you can read about the virtual tour offerings, and access classroom resources and booking links.

The Australian War Memorial also provides a range of classroom materials and resources for students to commemorate this solemn remembrance event within their local communities, and to recognise and understand the service and sacrifice of these men and women.
