Senior students at Our Lady of the Way Catholic Primary School, Wallan East, have constructed a lasting symbol of welcome with the creation of a fire pit.
Earlier this year, students in Years 5 and 6 at the school took part in a Welcome to Country activity with a local Indigenous leader. To continue the spirit of welcome, the school purchased a fire pit made from local railway materials. The students took part in designing and making the base for the fire pit out of bricks left over from the new middle and senior student building currently under construction at the school.
Emblazoned with the world ‘Wominjeka’ (welcome), the fire pit has been fitted into the brick work and now stands proud between the school’s flagpole and community garden.
